England's 1966 World Cup hero Sir Geoff Hurst, who is the first of the only two men to score a world cup final hat-trick, has recently called out Prince Williams and the Royal family for missing out on the Lionesses' FIFA Women's World Cup 2023 final against Spain in Australia.
While the England women's team continued their strong performance from their victory in the European championship last year to qualify for the world cup final this year. However, the Lionesses failed to win their first-ever world cup trophy and England's first since 1966 when they defeated West Germany 4-2 in the final at Wembley Stadium.
While talking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Hurst was asked if it was a mistake that no one from the royal family attended the final. The 81-year-old said, "Yes, I do. I think if the royals attend the men’s game, they should definitely. It’s an English team, a World Cup tournament, a member of the royal family should definitely have gone. No argument at all about that"
Ahead of the world cup final between England and Spain, Prince William issued an apology in advance with a social media video message. In the video, William was joined by his daughter Princess Charlotte and said, " Lionesses, we want to send you huge good luck for tomorrow. "
He added, " We are sorry we cannot be there in person but we are so proud of everything you have achieved and the millions you’ve inspired here and around the world. So go out there tomorrow and really enjoy yourselves."
On Sunday, Spain defeated England 1-0 as captain Olga Carmona scored the only goal of the game to help La Roja win their first-ever women's world cup trophy in Australia. With the victory, Spain becomes the only second country after Germany to win both Men's and Women's FIFA World Cup titles.
