On Monday, 28 October, Manchester United sacked manager Erik ten Hag with immediate effect after two and half years in-charge of the club. The board members of Manchester United informed the Dutchman about their decision to part ways with him less than 24 hours after the Red Devils suffered a 2-1 defeat against West Ham at the London Stadium, to slip down to 14th place in the Premier League standings.
Manchester United also confirmed that assistant manager Ruud van Nistelrooy will be taking charge of the team on an interim basis with the support of the current coaching team. In the meantime, the English giants will be recruiting the permanent manager for the first-team, and according to the recent rumours, Zinedine Zidane, Xavi, Thomas Frank, Rúben Amorim, and Gareth Southgate are some of the names who could fill the role.
Erik ten Hag won the League Cup and FA Cup with Manchester United during his two and half year tenure
In their latest post on their official Instagram account, Manchester United broke the news about sacking their manager, which read, “Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager. Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024. We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future. Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach supported by the current coaching team whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.”
Under Erik ten Hag, Manchester United lost four in the first nine matches of the ongoing 2024-25 season of the Premier League, accumulating just 11 points, while scoring only eight goals and conceding 11, which was their second worst start in the league campaign. Meanwhile, in the UEFA Europa League, the English giants have drawn their first three matches against Twente, Porto, and Fenerbahce to languish in 21st place in a 36-team competition.
Moreover, during his time at Manchester United, Erik ten Hag won two trophies, and the FA Cup final win over Manchester City at the end of last season led to his managerial contract with the club getting extended by a year.
