Switzerland opened their UEFA Euro Championship 2024 campaign with a brilliant win over Hungary on Saturday, June 15. The Group A clash at the RheinEnergieStadion saw the Swiss defeat their Hungarian counterparts by 3-1. Before that, the tournament opener saw hosts Germany thrashing Scotland 5-1 in an exciting game on Friday, June 14.

In the game, Kwadwo Duah gave Switzerland an early lead with his first international goal in the 12th minute to give the side an early lead. Playing his second game for Switzerland, Duah shot low past goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi off a pass from Aebischer. Nearly thirty minutes later, in the 45th minute, Michel Aebischer found the back of the net to put the side in a solid position with 2-0 right before halftime.

However, Barnabas Varga came up with a header in the 66th minute to give Hungary some stability and put them back in contention. Breel Embolo scored in the stoppage time with a lob over the goalkeeper to ensure the first win for the side. With the win, the Swiss are currently seated second in Group A.

On the other hand, Hungary had its first loss in a competitive game since September 2022.  Switzerland will be up against Steve Clarke’s Scotland on Wednesday before the latter face Hungary next Sunday.
