English Premier League side Everton has received a new two-point deduction for breaching Premier League profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) up to 2023. This was the second point deduction for the Toffees, as the PL docked a record 10 points in November for a £19.5m overspend in the four years up to 2022 although that was reduced to six points on appeal.
The development comes after Everton registered a thrilling 1-0 win over Burnley on the back of Dominic Calver-Lewin's first-half extra-time goal. Despite the result, this latest points deduction drops Everton one place to 16th in the table, two points above the relegation zone. If Sean Dyche's men fail to stay up it will be the Merseyside-based club's first relegation since 1972.
Addressing this point deduction, Everton, in a statement, said, “While the club’s position has been that no further sanction was appropriate, the club is pleased to see that the commission has given credit to the majority of the issues raised by the club, including the concept of double punishment, the significant mitigating circumstances facing the club due to the war in Ukraine, and the high level of co-operation and early admission of the club’s breach.
Similarly, the Premier League statement on the deduction said, “Everton remains committed to working collaboratively with the league on all matters relating to PSR but is extremely concerned by the inconsistency of different commissions in respect of points deductions applied.”
