On Sunday, December 15, veteran Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was suspended from bowling across all top-level cricketing tournaments. The decision was announced after the Bangladesh all-rounder was initially suspended from bowling across all competitions played under the jurisdiction of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Friday, December 13.

Earlier, the ECB suspended the 37-year-old after an independent assessment was conducted at Loughborough University. His bowling action was reported during his single apperance for Surrey in a county match against Somerset in September 2024. On-field umpires of the match, Steve O’Shaughnessy and David Millns raised concerns on the veteran all-rounder’s bowling action, leading to his suspension.

After the ECB banned the Bangladesh all-rounder, he was then in the radar of the International Cricket Council under Section 11.3 of the ICC regulations. As per the statement released by the ECB, “Shakib completed an independent assessment at Loughborough University earlier this month, which found that the elbow extension in his bowling action exceeded the 15 degree threshold as defined in the Regulations.”

The confirmation of Shakib Al Hasan being banned from bowling across all domestic as well as international tournaments was conveyed by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). "The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has been informed that national team all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been suspended from bowling in competitions under the jurisdiction of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). As a result, Shakib is also suspended from bowling in domestic cricket competitions outside Bangladesh and in international cricket," the BCB statement said.

"Should the results of this [reassessment] analysis clear his action, Shakib will be permitted to bowl in international cricket and in domestic cricket competitions under the jurisdiction of all national cricket federations," it added. Despite being banned from bowling, Shakib Al Hasan can continue to play as a batter across competitions.
