The IPL (Indian Premier League) is popularly known to be a batsman-dominated competition, where powerful batting performances tend to steal the limelight. Yet, fast bowlers have an important yet demanding role in this high-scoring setup. In spite of the focus on big-hitting and high scores, fast bowlers must display skill, accuracy, and versatility to succeed in such a situation. They have the responsibility of holding back hard-hitting batsmen, taking early wickets, and providing crucial breakthroughs, particularly at the death overs. With that said, here’s a look at the fastest bowls bowled in the history of the IPL.
At number one we have Shaun Tait bowling a cracking 157.7 km/h delivery. Representing Rajasthan Royals in the 2011 season, Australian speedster Shaun Tait bowled the fastest delivery in IPL history at 157.7 km/h against the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals). At number two we have the Kiwi pacer Lockie Ferguson bowling a 157.3 km/h delivery. New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson, playing for Gujarat Titans, delivered a 157.3 km/h ball during the 2022 IPL final against Rajasthan Royals.
At number three we have the famous Jammu speedster Umran Malik bowling 157 km/h. Sunrisers Hyderabad's Umran Malik showcased his raw pace by clocking 157 km/h in a match against Delhi Capitals during the 2022 season. At number four we have Mayank Yadav, who bowled a 156.7 km/h delivery. Lucknow Super Giants' emerging talent Mayank Yadav bowled a 156.7 km/h delivery against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the 2024 season, marking him as one of the fastest Indian bowlers in the league.
And last but not the least, at number five we again have Mayank Yadav. Mayank followed up his heroics against RCB with another express delivery, this time against Punjab Kings. His 155.8 km/h scorcher left Punjab’s batters visibly uncomfortable, reinforcing his status as one of the most exciting young fast bowlers globally.
