Veteran India spinner Piyush Chawla recalled his memorable interaction with the late legendary Shane Warne and shared how it made a huge impact on his confidence. Chawla revealed how a small interaction with Warne helped him gain his confidence. Notably, Warne, who passed away in 2022, is regarded as one of the best spinners of all time in his home country and the rest of the world.
Chawla was a part of the Kings XI Punjab (Punjab Kings) in the inaugural season of the IPL in 2008 when he was just 19 years old. In two of the games against the Chennai Super Kings and the Rajasthan Royals, he struggled and conceded 46 runs in three overs. Talking about the same, he revealed how Yuvraj Singh arranged for a meeting between Warne and Chawla which helped the latter boost his confidence.
On 2 Sloggers podcast, Chawla revealed, "Yuvraj came up and he made me meet the legendary Shane Warne. I went to his room and started speaking. I wasn't able to speak much English and couldn't understand much with the accent. But I understood little I could. After 40 minutes, I left his room and I'm not kidding but I felt there is no bowler better than me. He said so many things to me and made me understand little things about cricket.”
Life is easy when you have keepers like MS Dhoni behind stumps: Piyush Chawla
On the same podcast, Chawla spoke about sharing a dressing room with former India captain MS Dhoni. He revealed how having a keeper like MS Dhoni helped him and simply made things easy for him. Chawla said, “MS Dhoni would guide bowlers from behind the stumps. As a bowler you face certain difficulties, including not being able to understand the nature of the pitch, bowling angles and more.”
He added, “I was also very young at that time. In such situations, having such an experienced keeper who has played so many matches would make things easy. He would guide us from behind the stumps. In short, life is easy when you have keepers like MS Dhoni.”
