Fernando Alonso, a veteran F1 driver on Thursday, April 11 quashed his Mercedes transfer rumours as he signed a new deal with his current F1 side Aston Martin. The 42-year-old, who was out of contract at the end of the ongoing season, extended his stay at the Aston Martin until 2026, meaning that he will continue to drive till the age of 45.
The Spainard, who made a move to Aston Martin from Alpine in 2023. In a story captioned, “The story continues”, Alonso was quick to assure his stay as he said, “I’m Fernando Alonso and I’m here to stay.”
Aston Martin Team Principal Mike Krack called this news as a “fantastic” one. Peaking after the announcement, Mike said, “Securing Fernando’s long-term future with Aston Martin Aramco is fantastic news. We have built a strong working relationship over the last 18 months and we share the same determination to see this project succeed.”
“We have been in constant dialogue over the last few months and Fernando has been true to his word: when he decided he wanted to continue racing, he talked to us first. Fernando has shown he believes in us, and we believe in him,” he added.
The Aston Martin sit fifth in the Constructors’ Standings after opening four rounds of 2024, behind Mercedes, McLaren, Ferrari and Red Bull. The 42-year-old has won 32 F2 races and will soon become the first driver to take part in 400 Grand Prixs.
