Field hockey will reportedly be axed from the 2026 edition of the Commonwealth Games, which is set to be hosted in Glasgow, Scotland. The official confirmation about the same is expected to be made on Monday, October 21. Notably, the 2022 edition of the tournament, held in Birmingham had featured 19 games. However, the organisers of the 2026 edition had earlier said that they will include just 10 sports in the 2026 Games.
As per the latest report by IANS, the organisers might axe field hockey from the game. Notably, at the 2022 edition of the tournament, India came home with a total of 61 medals, including 22 gold. A total of 12 medals were won in wrestling, whereas India got 10 medals in weightlifting and 8 in athletics. Apart from them, Indian boxers and paddlers contributed 7 medals each to the overall tally. Speaking of medals in field hockey, India have won a total of six medals, three silver medals in men’s hockey and a gold, silver and bronze in women’s hockey.
Scotland to host 2026 Commonwealth Games from July 23 to 2 August
The dates for the 2026 Commonwealth Games have been confirmed and Scotland is set to host the sporting tournament from July 23 to August 2, 2026. The dates of the tournament were confirmed earlier in a report to Glasgow City Council. The Scottish Government stepped in to host the tournament after Australia's Victoria pulled out due to rising costs. Notably, the 2026 season will begin exactly 12 years after those held in Glasgow in 2014.
The reports also state that a total of four venues have been decided for the event, including the Emirates Arena, Tollcross International Swimming Centre, the Scottish Events Campus and Scotstoun Stadium. Moreover, the reports of no road-based events including cycling or time trials have also surfaced.
