The FIFA Club World Cup 2025 is set to begin from June 14 and will be a month-long tournament, with the final being played on July 14. This is the 21st edition of FIFA’s international club competition however this year’s Club World Cup will be the first-ever to be played with 32 teams in a new format. FIFA has recently made a massive announcement that the total prize money for this tournament will be USD 1 billion. The announcement came after the FIFA Council meeting was held in Zurich a day ago with FIFA President Gianni Infantino being the Chair.
The new format of the Club World Cup, which will feature 32 teams for the first time, is set to be similar to the FIFA World Cup. Eight groups of four teams each will compete in the group-stage with the top two teams from each group qualifying for the knockout round. Subsequently, three knockout rounds namely; round of 16, quarterfinals and semi-finals will take place before the final is contested.

Along with this massive announcement, there were a couple of other big discussions and decisions taken during this council. FIFA estimated USD 2 billion in revenue from the upcoming Club World Cup, setting a new benchmark for club football. The FIFA President Gianni Infantino said that this particular competition will benefit football clubs like no other competition has done before. He also added, “All revenue generated by the tournament will be distributed among the participating clubs and via club solidarity across the world as FIFA will not keep a single dollar.”
Another big announcement was the introduction of a similar format tournament for women football clubs across the world. FIFA announced that the Women’s FIFA Club World Cup will be held in 2028, featuring the top 19 clubs across the world.
