Stuart MacGill, the Australian cricketer, who was one of the best spinners in the country, has been found guilty of taking part in drug supply which began under his restaurant in Sydney’s north shore, and his sentencing hearing got adjourned for eight weeks. At the same time, the 54-year-old has been cleared by the jury in regards to knowingly taking part in a cocaine deal in the drug supply case, and notably, when the verdict was read, he had little to no emotion on his face.
As per the report published in ESPNcricinfo, Stuart MacGill had knowledge about a cocaine deal happening, which had begun in his restaurant, although he didn’t know the scale of it. With that, as per the jury present in the Sydney District Court, he was acquitted of taking part in a larger commercial drug supply nearly four years ago, which was roughly around Aus$330,000 for a kilogram of cocaine.
Stuart MacGill's sentence in drug supply charge will be announced in eight weeks
The aforementioned drug deal happened between his regular drug dealer and brother-in-law Marino Sotiropoulos after Suart MacGill had set up a meeting in his restaurant. It is understood that the prosecutors went for the argument around how the drug deal couldn’t have gone down without the prior involvement of the former Australian cricketer.
It led to the jury dismissing the claims of the Crown about Stuart MacGill knowingly being involved in a one-kilogram cocaine deal, but they found him guilty of taking part in the drug supply, which was a lesser charge in comparison. The Mount Lawley-born will now have to wait for eight weeks before his sentencing gets announced.
