As reported by Fox Sports, the all-rounder who served as the captain for five years informed this decision to his teammates after their final league stage game, which was played at the Hobart Hurricanes at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on January 15th.

After a disappointing season with the Stars, Maxwell said, “We left our run in someone else’s hands which is never what you want to do in this game. We put ourselves in this position and we have to live with that now.”

Speaking of Maxwell, the Aussie all-rounder took over the leadership in 2018 following John Hasting departure. Under Maxwell’s captaincy, the Stars made it to the BBL decider twice, in both 2018-19 and 2019-20, but lost to Melbourne Renegades and Sydney Sixers respectively. Although he remains contracted with the Stars for another two seasons, but will focus of batting and bowling, supporting the new captain, who is yet to be announced.

“After the first couple of years, having so much dominance and not being able to get over that final hurdle, it feels like the last four years out of the finals contention is quite frustrating. We feel like we’ve had a good enough list, probably haven’t had enough luck with injuries and timing, replacements and it just all seems compound on itself,” the 35-year-old further added as quoted by Fox Sports.
