After leading Mumbai to their second Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) title, Shreyas Iyer praised his teammate Prithvi Shaw’s talent, but wanted him to improve his work ethic, which will propel him to stardom once again in his young career. The 30-year-old remarked that Prithvi Shaw is a “God-gifted player,” while pointing out how no other player in the world possesses the talent coursing through his veins, which he has already shown at the domestic and international level.

Notably, in the SMAT 2024 final, which was played at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Mumbai defeated Madhya Pradesh by five wickets, to become new domestic T20 champion in India. After Madhya Pradesh had posted a competitive total of 174/8 with their captain Rajat Patidar’s 81 in double quick-time before Mumbai batters delivered a collective batting performance, to overhaul the target with five wickets in hand and 13 balls to spare.

I think, personally, he is a God-gifted player: Shreyas Iyer on Prithvi Shaw

Shortly after the title win in SMAT, Shreyas Iyer spoke about Prithvi Shaw in detail, remarking that the young right-handed batter has insane talent, but it needs to be harnessed. He was quoted as saying, by Cricbuzz, “I think, personally, he is a God-gifted player. The amount of talent he possesses as an individual, no one has it. That's true. It's just that he needs to improve his work ethics.”

The Mumbai captain alluded to the need for Prithvi Shaw to get his work ethic right, which is the basic prerequisite to be a successful sportsperson. He remarked, “And I have said it before as well in many of the interviews. He (Prithvi Shaw) needs to get his work ethics right. And if he does that, you know, sky is the limit for him. Can you force him to? I can't force him. He has played so much of cricket. And everyone has given him inputs. At the end of the day, it's his job to go out there and figure out things for himself.”
