In a major upset in the US Open 2022, American tennis player Frances Tiafoe defeated 22-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal in the fourth round on Monday and ended the Spaniard's  22-match winning streak at the Grand Slam tournaments.

Last week, reports emerged that Nadal could leave the last grand slam tournament of the year mid-way as his pregnant wife Maria Francisca Perello was admitted to a clinic in Palma, Mallorca.

In a post-match interview at the Flushing Meadows, Nadal credited Frances Tiafoe for his deserving victory and said: "I need to go back. I need to fix things, life, then I don't know when I (am) going to come back. I (am) going to try to be ready mentally. When I feel that I will be ready to compete again, I will be there."

The 36-year-old Spanish international is expecting his first child with wife Perello later this year while the tennis star is also expected to miss the Laver Cup 2022, taking place from September 23 to 25. Nadal was likely to play for Team Europe alongside Roger Federer,  Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray.

Nadal opened the 2022 year with two Grand Slam titles after winning the Australian Open and the French Open. However, the Spaniard faced an injury in the Wimbledon 2022 and withdrew from the tournament after winning the quarter-final match.
