Vinesh Phogat, Indian wrestler, who suffered a big blow on the morning of Wednesday, August 7, talked to her mother a few hours ago and promised her to win a gold at Paris Olympics 2024. Phogat, who became the first ever Indian woman to reach the wrestling finals in the Olympics, suffered a big setback after she was disqualified from her gold medal match. However, a few hours ago, on the previous evening, Phogat talked to her mother and said that she would fight for gold.
Phogat took down Cuba’s Lopez Guzman in the semifinal of women’s 50kg freestyle to ensure at least a silver for India in Paris. She was set to contest against USA’s Sarah Ann Hildebrandt for the yellow metal. After her semi-final win, Phogat talked to her mother, Premlata, over a quick video call and said that she will bring gold. The 29-year-old told Premlata, “Gold laana hai, gold.” Not only this, but Phogat also refused to talk to the media after her semifinal win and said, “Tomorrow is an important day, will talk then.”

After Vinesh’s heartbreaking disqualification from her gold medal match, PM Narendra Modi consoled the wrestler and said that she is a champion and an inspiration to every Indian. PM Modi tweeted, “Vinesh, you are a champion among champions! You are India's pride and an inspiration for each and every Indian. Today's setback hurts. I wish words could express the sense of despair that I am experiencing.”
He added, “At the same time, I know that you epitomise resilience. It has always been your nature to take challenges head on. Come back stronger! We are all rooting for you.” As per a report by PTI, PM Modi also spoke to IOA President PT Usha and sought first-hand information from her on the issue and the options India has in the wake of Vinesh's setback. The report stats that he asked her to explore all possible options to help Vinesh’s case. He also urged PT Usha to file a strong protest regarding her disqualification if it comes to any help for Vinesh.
