India captain Rohit Sharma thanked his three pillars who played a significant role in India’s win in the T20 World Cup 2024 . Notably, Sharma was present at the CEAT Cricket Ranking Awards ceremony where he bagged the CEAT Men's International Cricketer of the Year Award after he led the Men in Blue to win the T20 World Cup 2024. During the ceremony, Sharma talked about his pillars who played a crucial role behind the team’s success in the recently-concluded tournament in the USA and the West Indies.
Sharma named the trio of former head coach Rahul Dravid, chief of selection panel Ajit Agarkar and BCCI secretary Jay Shah for their support that helped the side in winning their second T20 World Cup after a gap of 17 years. He said, “It was my dream to transform this team and not worry too much about the stats, results and making sure that we create that environment where people can go out there and play freely without thinking too much.”
Sharma called it quits on his T20 career following India’s triumph in the tournament along with teammate Virat Kohli. The 37-year-old cricketer added, “That is what was required. I got a lot of help from my three pillars, who are actually Mr Jay Shah, Mr Rahul Dravid and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar. That was very critical for me to do what I did and not to forget players, who came in at different points in time and helped the team to achieve what we achieved.”
Talking about their victorious moment in the marquee tournament, Rohit said, “(It was) a feeling that cannot come everyday. It was something that we were hoping for. When we won the World Cup, it was important for all of us to enjoy that we did pretty well and thanks to our nation as well for celebrating with us.”
