In the Charlotte Edwards Cup 2023, the domestic women’s T20 tournament in England, Grace Scrivens tried to pull off a humorous prank with the wicket-keeper gloves on the field last week against Northern Diamonds last week. But in doing that, she cost her team Sunrisers five penalty runs. The mistake from the 19-year-old Kent cricketer wasn’t ideal for the Sunrisers as they lost the match by 35 runs to the Northern Diamonds at the Headingley in Leeds.

On May 28, when Abtaha Maqsood of the Sunrisers bowled the fourth ball of the eighth over, the batter on strike was Sterre Kalis of the Northern Diamonds, who tried to glance it towards the fine-leg region. Even though she missed her stroke, the ball slowly trickled towards the deep fine-leg region to allow her and Leah Dobson to sprint through for leg-byes.

Meanwhile, the ball was given chase by fielders and wicket-keeper Amara Carr, who took off her right glove. As she threw back the ball towards the striker's end from the fine-leg boundary, Grace Scrivers had picked up her glove and wore it to collect the ball, while hilariously gesturing to remove the bails from the stumps.

In the meantime, the umpires on the field, Phil Mustard and Simon Widdup, spotted the violation of multiple laws of the MCC from Grace Scrivens to award five penalty runs to her opposition as per Law 28.2.3.

Law 28.1 states, "No fielder other than the wicket-keeper shall be permitted to wear gloves or external leg guards." Meanwhile, Law 28.2.1 states, "He/she will be deemed to have fielded the ball illegally if, while the ball is in play he/she wilfully uses anything other than part of his/her person to field the ball."
