Ahead of the first game, the Women’s Premier League has got its first controversy as West Indian all-rounder Deandra Dottin has shared a cryptic message after being ruled out of the tournament. Gujarat Giants had picked up the West Indian for a price of INR 60L. But before the first game, the Giants announced that Dottin has been ruled out of the tournament.

The Gujarat-based franchise stated that Dottin was “recovering from a medical situation". But Dottin in multiple social media posts stated that she is “recovering from nothing”. In a tweet, she further stated that she dealing with ‘the Holy Ghost’.

Replacing  Deandra Dottin, the Gujarat Giants decided to bring in Aussie-Irish player Kim Garth. She was part of Australia's T20 World Cup winning squad and went unsold during the WPL auction earlier this year. Giants announced the arrival of Garth via their official Twitter. The post said, " Another lioness from Down Under, Kim Garth joins our pride!"

Garth will be the fifth Australian player to be part of the Gujarat squad, who have named Aussie legend Beth Mooney as their captain. The 26-year-old Garth made her debut for Ireland at the age of 14in an ODI against New Zealand in 2010. She played for the Irish for nearly a decade before switching her international loyalties to Australia. She made her international debut for Australia last year in a T20 match against India.
