On Sunday, January 5, India succumbed to a six-wicket defeat against Australia and eventually lost the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 by 1-3 margin with one Test ending in a draw. With this defeat in Sydney, they also failed to make their third straight apperance in the World Test Championship final, which is set to be held from June 11-15 at the Lord’s.
However, the defeat meant that they failed to register hat-trick of wins in Australia, it also added worries in the dressing room with India losing back-to-back Test series. After the series defeat, Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir minced no words, speaking on the areas where India lost the game as well as the series.
I can’t comment on furture of any player: Gautam Gambhir on future on Rohit-Virat
After the end of the game and the series, former India cricketer turned head coach, Gautam Gambhir addressed the press conference, answering the burning questions. In one of them, a reporter asked Gambhir about the future of seniors in the side, indirectly pointing towards Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. It is to be noted that Rohit Sharma stood out of the fifth Test, becoming the first Indian captain to drop out of XI midway through an international series, Virat Kohli continued his dismal run, falling in a similar trap of outside off-stump delivery.
When asked on heir future, Gambhir quickly replied, "I can't comment on the future of any players, it is up to them. They have the hunger and commitment - hopefully they can do everything they can to take Indian cricket forward". Gambhir also maintained that he has to be “fair” to everyone in the dressing room, be it an experienced member of the group or someone who hasn't even made his debut.
"To keep dressing room happy, I have to be honest and fair to everyone," he added. Speaking on Rohit Sharma’s performance in the ongoing BGT 2024-25, across three Tests, the 37-year-old had scored 31 runs at a comparatively lower average. His highest score in the BGT series was 10. On the other hand, Virat Kohli managed only 190 runs in five Tests, with his only century being an unbeaten knock in India’s victory in Perth Test.
