Sanjay Bangar, India’s former batting coach, questioned the decision of Virat Kohli to give up Test captaincy in 2022 following the tour to South Africa. The 51-year-old felt that Virat Kohli should have continued slightly longer as Test captain, to take India to greater heights of success in the longest format of the game.
Notably, during his reign as Indian captain in the Test format, Virat Kohli led the team 68 times, winning 40 matches with a percentage of 58.82. He was instrumental in India’s first Test series win in Australia in 2018-19, apart from taking the national team to the final of the inaugural ICC World Test Championship in 2021.
Virat Kohli also helped India claim the top spot in the ICC Test Team Rankings after taking over the reigns from MS Dhoni in 2015, when they were languishing in seventh place.

While speaking on The Rao Podcast, Sanjay Bangar spoke about the captaincy of Virat Kohli in Tests, and how he decided to leave it, “I personally feel that he (Virat Kohli) should have continued slightly for longer as a Test captain. He probably captained India in 65 Test matches, and one of things I feel is that he could have probably continued as a Test captain for a longer period.”
After Virat Kohli left India’s Test captaincy, Rohit Sharma took over the reigns from him, and he has been quite impressive in his tenure in the last couple of years.
