Indian athletes expressed their joy as they were honoured by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for their incredible performance at Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022. Several athletes got gifts for the Prime Minister during their interaction with the Indian PM on Saturday.
Narendra Modi hosted the Indian contingent at his residence to congratulate the players on Saturday. The Indian athletes had an incredible run in Birmingham as they bagged 61 medals, including 22 gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze.
Hima Das talked about her gift and wrote on her Twitter handle, "Elated to receive blessings from our honourable Prime Minister - Shri @narendramodi Ji, by virtue of Commonwealth Games 2022. Fortunate to have presented him with our traditional gamcha, wrapped with immense gratitude from all of Assam."
Similarly, light flyweight gold medallist Nikhat Zareen gifted the Prime Minister her boxing gloves which had the signatures of all the boxers, who competed in Birmingham Games. "Honoured to gift the boxing gloves signed by all the pugilists to our honourable Prime Minister @narendramodi sir. Thank you for this amazing opportunity. A great day spent with my fellow athletes who have made the country proud," Nikhat tweeted.
Similarly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked about the incredible performance of Indian athletes at the 2022 CWG. He addressed how this is the start of a golden generation in Indian sports where every talented will get his/her deserved opportunities.
“The real assessment of this performance can't be made with just number of medals, our athletes competed neck-to-neck. There may have been a difference of 1s or 1cm but we will make that up I am confident of that," the Indian PM said during his speech.
He continued, “It is just a start and we are not going to just sit quietly, golden period of Indian sports is knocking on the doors. We have the responsibility of making a sporting system which is the best in the world, inclusive, diverse and dynamic. No talent should be left out as they are all assets.”
"Since last time, we have won medals in four new sports, from lawn bowls to athletics, our performance has been spectacular. This performance will help increase youth's interest in new sports. We have to improve our performance in new sports," he added further.
