On Sunday, January 5, Manchester United delivered a spirited performance at the Anfield after a string of poor results, to earn a 2-2 draw against Premier League leaders Liverpool. After the conclusion of the pulsating contest at Merseyside, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was “pretty upset” about how the team hasn’t been able to perform well on a weekly basis like they were able to do against Liverpool at Anfield this weekend.

Notably, Liverpool were overwhelming favourites going into their clash against Manchester United at home, but they weren’t allowed to play their free-flowing football by the visitors at any stage in the first half, which ended without a goal. At the start of the second half, the intensity of the contest got raced up by a notch, and Lisandro Martinez opened the scoring with his second goal in his Manchester United career in the 52nd minute.

Amad Diallo scored equaliser for Man Utd at Anfield in 80th minute

Cody Gakpo equalised for Liverpool in the 59th minute before a handball from Matthijs de Ligt allowed Mohamed Salah to put his team in a 2-1 lead in the 70th minute with a penalty. At one stage, it looked like Liverpool would run away with the contest, but against the run of play, Amad Diallo redeemed himself for a big miss in the first half with a sensational equaliser in the 80th minute, to make it 2-2.

Both the teams pushed for the winner late on, and in the 97th and final minute, Harry Maguire was free inside the Liverpool six-yard box, but he scuffed his shot over the top of the bar which frustrated everyone involved with Manchester United at the full-time whistle. In the post-match presentation, captain Bruno Fernandes first spoke about being happy with the result, but at the same time, he wanted his players to repeat the same performance every week.

He was quoted as saying, as per BBC Sport, “I think it is a really good result, we could have even won the game at the end, but we can’t be satisfied to be honest and I’m pretty upset because if we show this today at Anfield against Liverpool, who is first in the league and has been probably the outstanding team in the Premier League this season, why can’t we do this every week?” Manchester United will be taking on Arsenal in their next game on the weekend at the Emirates Stadium in London in the FA Cup third round.
