Shakib Al Hasan, the esteemed Bangladesh all-rounder, was suspended from bowling in December 2024 after his action was deemed illegal during an English county match for Surrey in September 2024. Subsequent assessments, including one at the Sri Ramachandra Centre for Sports Science in Chennai, confirmed the infringement, leading to his exclusion from bowling in international and domestic cricket. However, as of March 20, 2025, Shakib has successfully cleared a reassessment of his bowling action conducted by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). This clearance allows him to resume bowling in English county cricket and other competitions.
This ban meant that the Bangladesh veteran also missed out on playing for his national team during the latest Champion Trophy. Although Bangladesh had a dismal set of results in the 50-over tournament, with two losses and a match abandoned due to rain against the hosts; the presence of Shakib Al Hasan could have provided a much needed boost to the Bangladesh team due to his sheer experience. Shakib recently spoke out about his exclusion from the Bangladesh squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Shakib was unhappy over missing out on the 2025 Champions Trophy
Shakib told Cricbuzz about missing out on playing for his national team in the Champions Trophy 2025. He said, “I don’t have any complaints but if the communication was better, in that case I would have been happier,” The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had opted to not select Shakib for solely a batting role in the tournament, naming Najmul Hossain Shanto as the captain.
After the removal of his ban by the ECB, his former team Surrey’s head coach spoke about the possible inclusion of Shakib in the team. He said that while there was no intention to have Shakib play for the team, he did not completely rule out a move for the Bangladeshi all-rounder.
