With the reports of implementing a two-tier system in Test cricket going around the corner, former West Indies skipper Clive Lloyd opposed this idea as he feels it will be unfair to lower ranked Test teams and defy the idea of giving the Test status to new nations. The two-time World Cup winning captain said that he is very disturbed with the idea of two-tier system in the longest format of the game and doesn’t see it happening in the near future.

In a two-tier system in Test cricket, the top tier teams will be seen competing against each other more often while the lower ranked teams will not get many chances. The idea is to sustain the longest format of the game. “Well, I don’t see a two-tier system (happening). I am very disturbed about this and I’m hoping that something is done, and that it must be stopped now. We’re not talking about 30 or 40 cricket teams - it’s 10 teams. We should be able to have a system where everybody should be playing cricket often,” Clive Lloyd was quoted as saying by the Times of India.

T20 cricket is exhibition, Test cricket is examination: Clive Llyod

Speaking further, Clive Lloyd said that there should be system where most teams would be having a chance of playing Test cricket in the modern era of T20 cricket. “Test cricket is still one of the most popular games to play as far as cricket is concerned. But we seem to be putting it to one side, and I don’t think that’s very good at all. We have to have a better system. We have to sit down and work out and not just say that T20 is ‘the’ thing,” Clive Lloyd said.

“Not everybody wants to watch T20 cricket - we want to watch Test cricket because T20 cricket is an exhibition, while Test cricket is an examination,” the former cricketer further added.
