Former South Africa cricketer and batting stalwart, Herschelle Gibbs took the world by storm sharing a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) while taking a jibe at AB de Villiers. In a conversation involving several cricket enthusiasts, the former South African great also joined the discussion on the microblogging site, discussing how Champions Trophy and World Cup carry equivalent importance.
When a fan retweeted on Gibbs’ post writing, “I was told Champions Trophy was irrelevant tournament. Why does Gibbs, an actual international cricket, value that tournament and puts it in the same bracket as World Cup?”, the 50-year-old was quick to reply as he explained that for a cricketer in 90s and 2000s, “it was way more relevant than a t20 tournament”.
And I’ve won an IPL as well: Herschelle Gibbs puts end to AB de Villiers’ discussion
As the conversation was seen coming to an end with the former cricketer joining in, the fan who runs by the username @hxns1anda replied, “Sir, some AB fans told us it holds no value since their favourite player has poor record in that tournament. Thank you for this fitting reply to them”. Gibbs, who has an IPL title to his name, brought an end to the conversation of the greats, replying that he has also won an IPL title which AB de Villiers hasn’t.
“And I’ve won an IPL as well ” Gibbs replied, slyly hitting out at AB de Villers' fans. It is to be noted that Gibbs made his IPL debut in 2008 and went on to lift his maiden IPL title in 2009 with Deccan Chargers with his crucial knock of 53 runs. His last IPL match came in 2012. Overall, in the four IPL editions, he amassed 886 runs at anaverage of 27.69 and a strike rate of 109.79, including six fifty-plus scores.
