In an exclusive interview, Australian spinner Nathan Lyon hailed his Indian counterpart Ravichandran Ashwin, talking about how he loves watching him bowl while calling him “an absolute master in the craft of off-spin bowling.” Lyon, who stated that it has been an absolute privilege to play against Ashwin, also seemed excited about the upcoming five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test series against India, starting from November 22, while it will reach its conclusion in January of next year.
The first Test of the BGT series will be happening at the Optus Stadium in Perth in just over two and a half month’s time before India and Australia will head to Adelaide Oval for the second match. The remaining three Tests will happen at the GABBA in Brisbane, Melbourne Cricket Ground, and Sydney Cricket Ground, to determine whether Australia will be able to register their first series win against India in a decade or the visitors continue their victory march.
I have got nothing but respect for Ravichandran Ashwin: Nathan Lyon
While speaking in an exclusive interview, Nathan Lyon remarked that the Indian squad is filled with superstars against whom he wants to challenge himself. He said to Star Sports, “I've always said throughout my whole career I want to compete against the best and you look through the whole Indian line-up, the whole squad, there's absolute superstars everywhere you look and you want to compete and challenge yourself against them and I know Ashwin and we debuted around similar times and we've competed against each other in a number of series now and between me and Ashwin I have got nothing but respect for him.”
"I feel like I love watching him bowl, he's an absolute master in the craft of off-spin bowling and it's been an absolute privilege to play against him and learn off him. Pretty exciting, it's obviously a massive summer for us out here so can't wait to have the Indian guys out here,” Nathan Lyon added.
It's always an amazing rivalry: Cameron Green on Australia playing against India
Cameron Green, who has been a part of the last two Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test series in his young career, detailed the importance of competing against India in the longest format of the game. He said to Star Sports, “Yeah, I think it's always an amazing rivalry and I think lots of things come out of the tournament every single time we go versus each other. So yeah, I'm sure this series won't be any less. So yeah, looking forward to it. Every single point is pretty crucial for the World Test Championship. Any way you can kind of get an idea of how to get one up on your opponent, I think we'll try and take. So yeah, if it is a bit of a preview for a World Test Championship final again, I think yeah, we've been trying to get as much information out of India and see how we can win it again. Yeah, I'm sure it'll be a great series.”
