During an exclusive interview, Indian cricketer Krishnappa Gowtham made a shocking claim about not having a good experience while playing for Punjab Kings, then known as Kings XI Punjab, in the Indian Premier League (IPL). When the 35-year-old was asked about which team he wouldn’t want to play in the IPL again, he was quick to take the name of Punjab Kings, remarking that the reason is not only related to cricket, but also about not getting treated properly there.
Notably, it was in the build-up to the IPL 2020 season when Rajasthan Royals traded Krishnappa Gowtham to Punjab Kings for INR 6.20 crore after playing 22 matches for the former champions with moderate success as an all-rounder. During the IPL four years ago, Gowtham made only a couple of appearances for Punjab, picking up one wicket apart from scoring 42 runs before being released at the end of the season.
I wouldn’t give more than 100% to the Punjab Kings if they pick me: Krishnappa Gowtham
While talking to Cricket.com about his time in the IPL, ahead of the mega auction for the 2025 season, Krishnappa Gowtham spoke about which team he wouldn’t want to play in the league again, and remarked, “I would say Punjab Kings. I’m just being very honest. I’ve never had a good experience with them. There are other things; it’s not just about cricket. It’s not the way I would want to be treated as a cricketer. When I play for a team, I always give more than 100% for the team; I never keep anything back. But I wouldn’t give more than 100% to the Punjab Kings if they pick me (at the IPL 2025 mega auction).”
Earlier, Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell revealed shocking details about his fallout with former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag during their time at Kings XI Punjab, now known as Punjab Kings, in the 2017 season of the IPL. In his book called “The Showman,” Glenn Maxwell made a claim that Virender Sehwag, who was the Director of Cricket at PBKS at the time, picked the playing XI without consulting him (as he was the captain) and head coach J Arunkumar.
Maxwell also mentioned that at the conclusion of the IPL 2017, he was removed from the team’s WhatsApp group without prior knowledge, and when the Australian spoke to Sehwag about it, the latter didn’t respond in kind, which led to them not speaking again.
