The Bharat Ratna, Sachin Tendulkar, recalled the time from 2007 when he recommended MS Dhoni for India’s captaincy to the BCCI after deciding to not take the responsibility due to his body being in “terrible shape.” He was speaking live on JioCinema in the build-up to the IPL 2024 season opener between the CSK and the RCB in Chennai.
Sachin Tendulkar, who had captained the Indian cricket team in the late 1990s, was offered the captaincy by the BCCI in 2007 after a disappointing ODI World Cup campaign under the leadership of Rahul Dravid. But, the 50-year-old didn’t say yes to the BCCI, instead recommending MS Dhoni’s name forward to take the Indian limited overs cricket into the future.
In the pre-match show for the IPL 2024, live streamed on JioCinema, Sachin Tendulkar addressed how MS Dhoni got his start in the captaincy role in 2007 and said, “The BCCI offered me captaincy in 2007, but my body was in terrible shape. My observation of MS Dhoni was very good. His mind is very stable, he's calm, he's instinctive, and makes the right decisions. I recommended him for the captaincy.”
Apart from revealing that he put the name of MS Dhoni forward for Team India captaincy, Sachin Tendulkar also spoke about the reason being his calmness and distinctiveness. He also pointed out the stable mindset of MSD, which allowed him to make the right decisions, more often than not.
Moreover, the IPL 2024 opener at the MA Chidambaram Stadium was won by the Chennai Super Kings, who defeated the Royal Challengers Bangalore by six wickets with eight balls remaining. Mustafizur Rahman was declared the player of the match for picking up four crucial wickets, helping the CSK restrict the RCB to a below-par total of 173/6.
