Former England captain Michael Vaughan has backed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decision to hand a two-year ban to Harry Brook for withdrawing from the Indian Premier League (IPL) for two consecutive seasons. A couple of weeks ahead of IPL 2025, the England batter pulled out his name from the tournament. Brook was expected to show up for Delhi Capitals (DC) in the competition as the franchise invested INR 6.25 crore to reserve the 26-year-old’s services at the mega auction held in Jeddah in October 2024.

Vaughan commented on BCCI’s stern action against Brook on the Club Prairie Fire podcast. Ex-England skipper feels the board has taken the correct decision as the right-handed batter opted out of the T20 extravaganza without providing any valid reason. "I think they are right. You put yourself forward. The rules were the rules. They announced them at the end of last year's IPL. Put yourself into the auction, you say yes, and then you pull yourself out for nothing. He's not injured, he just had a feeling that he just didn't want to get over there to play in the IPL. He's going to stay in the UK," said Vaughan.

Vaughan feels Brook might become England’s white-ball captain

Vaughan believes Brook might be handed England captaincy in limited-over formats in the upcoming days and the star player may want to focus on the welfare of his national side. However, Vaughan said the kind of decision Brook has taken impacts IPL franchises negatively.

"I get a feeling he's probably going to be the white-ball captain for England down the line, so he just wants to focus his attention on England, which all the England fans would be happy with, but I think the IPL had to bring something in because it does derail the franchises in the piece," added Vaughan.
