Manchester United legend Eric Cantona has spent many of his playing days in France as he moved around with more than five clubs in the span of nine years. Since his retirement, he has been a part of various films as an actor and now is pursuing a career as a musician. Cantona has recently criticised French Football and Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain for having ‘no history’.

In an interview with Le Parisien, Eric Cantona gave his opinion on the level of French football where he mentioned his distaste for the city of Paris as he implied that the city doesn’t have any soul. Cantona himself has 197 appearances playing in France.

Cantona said, "French football has no history. It is the only country in the world where the same city does not host two teams. So yes, there are people who love football, there are real fans, but not enough to have two clubs in one city." Here he refers to cities like Milan in Italy, and Manchester in England among others where the two clubs have existed for many years and both clubs have a huge fanbase in their respective cities. These same-city rivalries are some of the main attractions of the leagues around the world.

The 57-year-old also took a dig at PSG, which is owned by Qatar Sports Investments Group, as he continued, "I may be an old jerk, but I prefer to support football that has a soul, that has something that touches me. On the side of Paris, I would rather go to see the Red Star, in Saint-Ouen, than the PSG."

The Red Star club is one of the other clubs in Paris in the third tier of French football. It was founded 73 years earlier than PSG but the city is dominated by PSG fans because of its recent success.
