The International Council of Cricket (ICC) has announced the 2023 Cricketer of the Year Awards across formats and under various categories including the Emerging Cricketer and Associate Cricketer Awards on Thursday, January 25. The WTC 2021-23 and Men's ODI World Cup-winning Australian captain, Pat Cummins, has been named the Men's Cricketer of the Year while Indian star Virat Kohli won the ODI Cricketer of the Year.
Two days after announcing the Team of the Year across all formats for both Men's and Women's Cricket, the ICC announced the Best Cricketers award. Apart from Cummins and Virat, Aussie opener Usman Khawaja won the Men's Test Cricketer of the Year while India's swashbuckling batter Suryakumar Yadav won the Men's T20I Cricketer of the Year Award.
2023 Men's Cricketer of the Year: Pat Cummins
2023 was a golden year for the Aussies, especially for their skipper Pat Cummins, who led his side to win the WTC 2021-23, 2023 ODI World Cup, and also retained the 2023 Ashes in England. According to the ICC, Cummins beat compatriot Travis Head, who was the star in Australia's WTC Final and CWC 2023 final victories, and the Indian duo of Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja to win the prestigious award.
Virat Kohli has been named the ICC Men's ODI Cricketer of the Year. In 2023, Virat Kohli appeared in 27 ODI matches, playing 24 innings and scoring 1,377 runs at an average of 72.47 with a 99.13 strike rate. Last year, the 35-year-old Indian batter scored six centuries and eight half-centuries with an unbeaten knock of 166 runs as his highest score.
Usman Khawaja won the ICC Men's Test Cricketer of the Year. In 2023, Usman Khawaja played 24 innings in 13 Test matches, scoring 1,210 runs at an average of 52.60. In his highest-scoring year in Test cricket, the Australian opener smashed three centuries and six half-centuries with an unbeaten knock of 195 runs as his highest score.
Suryakumar Yadav won the ICC Men's T20I Cricketer of the Year. India's stand-in T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav scored 733 runs in 17 T20I innings at an average of 48.86. Last year, SKY scored two centuries and five half-centuries at a strike rate of 155.95.
