The International Cricket Council (ICC) imposed a one year ban on Sri Lankan spinner Praveen Jayawickrama for breaching the Anti Corruption Code. The international cricket governing body announced its decision on Monday, October 2. The bowler was charged by the regulating body with three counts of breaching the code. The ICC as well as Sri Lanka Cricket agreed to take action on the 26-year-old bowler with respect to the Lanka Premier League charge alongside the international match charges. 

The bowler was charged with three offences under the code Article 2.4.4. And 2.4.7. The first code states about “failing to report to the Anti-Corruption Unit without unnecessary delay, details of an approach he received to carry out fixing in future international matches.” It also talks about failing to report to the unit about the details of asking to approach another player on the behalf of the corruptor. On the other hand, Article 2.4.7 talks about “Obstructing the investigation by deleting messages in which the approaches and offers to engage in corrupt conduct were made.”

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the ban of the spinner from all formats of cricket for a year. The six months of the one year tenure will be suspended. The verdict came after the bowler admitted breaching Article 2.4.7 of the Code. The cricketer has represented Sri Lanka in five games across all three formats. His last appearance for the South Asian team came in May 2022 against Bangladesh, while his last ODI and T20I appearance came in September 2021 against South Africa and in June 2022 against Australia. 

The cricketer has picked 25 wickets in Tests, while his scalped five wickets in ODIs and two of his overall wickets came in T20Is. While he has not played international cricket in a long time, he has regularly appeared in domestic cricket. Jayawickrama’s last match took place on August 2, 2024, where Moors clashed against Kurunegala in the Major Clubs Limited Over Tournament.
