After New Zealand defeated India in the first-ever ICC World Test Championship final, the International Cricket Council (ICC) have already started working on the second cycle. Unlike the inaugural cycle of the Championship which saw changes being made midway through the schedule, the world cricket governing body is making a streamlined points system to avoid any inconsistency in the second edition.

The first and the main change that they are incorporating is that unlike the previous edition where each series was attributed a total of 120 points, the second edition will see the same accreted points for each match - a maximum of 12 per match. As per the new system, teams will be ranked on the percentage of available points they have won from the match they have played.

Such a system will make it easy to compare the performance of the team on the table at a given point during the cycle even if they haven’t played the same number of matches. ICC’s Acting Chief Executive Officer Geoff Allardice discussed the changes made in the second edition of the WTC points table in a recent interview with ESPNCricinfo.

Points for a win - 12

Points for a draw - 4

Meanwhile, it is also being learned that a team will be penalised for slow over rate with a point deducted from their Championship points for every over they fall behind.
