Top-seeded women’s singles I ga Swiatek crashed out of the US Open 2023 after suffering 6-3, 3-6, 1-6 defeat against World No. 21 Jelena Ostapenko. The World No. 1 crashed out in the women’s singles Round of 16 in the match which lasted for one hour and 48 minutes, earlier on Monday, September 4.

 

With this loss, the Polish tennis star who reigned at the top since Ash Barty announced her retirement last year, ended her No. 1 place after 75 straight weeks. Notably, this was also the 12th longest streak in the history of the sport, behind Chris Evert. Additionally, it was also the third longest first-time streak on WTA Tour, behind Steffi Graf (186 weeks) and Martina Hingis (80 weeks).

 

It is to be noted that Aryna Sabalenka will take on the World No1. ranking in the new list, which is set to release on September 11, Monday, following the completion of the Grand Slam.

 

Novak Djokovic to face to face Taylor Fritz in quarters

 

The World No. 2, Novak Djokovic rolled into his 13th US Open quarterfinal early on Monday, September 4 after registering a win over 105th ranked Borna Gojo. The three-time US Open champion cruised past his Croatian opponent 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 to set up a clash against Taylor Fritz.

 

The Serbian will aim to continue his dominance over Fritz, as he has beaten him in all seven meetings in the past, including a one-sided match in Cincinnati last month.
