During the third session on day two of the first Test match, Jasprit Bumrah picked up a four-wicket haul, playing a key role in bundling out Bangladesh for just 149 runs in their first innings. With that, India took a massive lead of 227 runs in the first innings before deciding to not enforce the follow-on at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, presumably to give their top order the chance to bat time in the second innings, while ensuring that their bowlers are not overworked in case Bangladesh would have batted better second time around in the Test.
After getting bundled out for 376 runs on the second morning of the first Test match, the Indian cricket team walked out to the field, aiming to put pressure on the Bangladesh batting lineup with the new ball in helpful conditions. In the first over of the Bangladesh first innings, Jasprit Bumrah cleaned up left-handed opener Shadman Islam with an absolute peach from round the wicket for just two runs.

Shortly after, Akash Deep picked up a couple of wickets on back-to-back deliveries of Zakir Hasan and Mominul Haque, to put Bangladesh under serious pressure. Mohammed Siraj got into the act with the key wicket of Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto for 20 off 30 before Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Mushfiqur Rahim for a single-digit score, reducing the visitors to 40/5.
Litton Das and Shakib Al Hasan stitched together a 51-run stand for the fifth wicket to thwart off Indian bowlers somewhat before they threw their wickets away to Ravindra Jadeja, while attempting to hit a big shot. The Bangladesh first innings didn’t last for long after that despite Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s unbeaten 27 off 52 as the tailenders at the other end lost their wickets cheaply.
For India, Jasprit Bumrah picked up four wickets in his 11-over spell, coming very close to yet another five-wicket haul on multiple occasions. The likes of Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, and Ravindra Jadeja took two wickets each, while local boy Ravichandran Ashwin wasn’t able to pick any wickets in the first innings of Bangladesh.
