India-born Ireland cricketer Simranjit Singh a.k.a Simi Singh has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. The 37-year-old is suffering from acute liver failure, waiting for a liver transplant to be performed at the hospital. The off-spin bowler, who is also a middle-order batter, was born in Mohali, and he played for Punjab at the U-14 and U-17 level but failed to make it to the U-19 level. This setback led him to pursue hotel management in Ireland in 2005. A year later, he joined Malahide Cricket Club in Dublin as a professional player. 

The 53-T20I veteran is being taken care of by his father-in-law, Parvinder Singh, who is part of the primary care giving group. For those who are not aware, a person who is a primary care of another individual or part of the primary care giving group of people. Coming back to Singh’s ordeal, his father-in-law mentioned that five to six months ago, the cricketer developed a strange kind of fever.

"Some five-six months back, when he was in Dublin, Ireland, Simi developed a strange kind of fever which kept coming and going. He got himself examined there, but nothing conclusive came out in the check-ups. The medical professionals there said that they couldn't find the underlying cause and therefore they wouldn't start medication," Parvinder said while speaking to the Times of India, narrating the family's ordeal.

Explaining his son-in-law’s ordeal, Parvinder Singh added that Simi Singh started taking the treatment of tuberculosis. However, it was later found out that the latter didn’t have TB, but his health kept deteriorating as his fever didn’t subside. Parvinder further added that the PGI Physicians detected acute liver failure in Simi Singh’s body. 

He also mentioned that Simi needed to be admitted to Medanta Hospital as soon as possible as any further delay would have meant that Simi would have slipped into a coma. Simi’s wife, Agamdeep Kaur has agreed to donate a part of her liver to save her husband’s life.

Talking about Simi’s cricket career, he has played 35 ODIs and 53 T20Is for Ireland. The right-hander has 593 runs in the 50-over format including a hundred against South Africa. With the ball, he has taken 39 wickets including a five-wicket haul. In the shortest format of the game, he has hit 296 runs with the bat and has 44 wickets with the ball to his name.
