The Indian cricket team is set to take on New Zealand in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Group A clash at the Dubai International Stadium in the UAE, on Sunday, March 2. Ahead of the highly anticipated clash, which will decide the fate of India and New Zealand in regards to which opponents they will face in the semi-finals stage of the Champions Trophy, this SportsTiger article is all about the history between both the teams in the ODI format.

The first ODI between India and New Zealand was played way back on June 14, 1975, during the first edition of the ODI World Cup in Manchester, which saw the Black Caps achieve a four-wicket win with seven balls remaining. It took India more than five years to defeat New Zealand for the first-time in ODI cricket, which was a five-run victory on December 9, 1980, in Perth.

During the early stages of the rivalry or lack thereof, New Zealand had a 11-4 head-to-head advantage in ODI cricket from 1975 to 1986 just before a three-year period when the Men in Blue defeated them 11 times in a row. Since then, these two countries have been embroiled in quite a rivalry in ODIs, which has ebbed and flowed in favour of both the teams at certain times.

The previous meeting in ODI cricket between India and New Zealand happened during the semi-final of the ODI World Cup 2023 in Mumbai, which the Men in Blue won with a very good margin of 70 runs. In the ICC Champions Trophy history, India have faced New Zealand only once, in the final of the 2000 edition, when it was called the ICC Knockout Trophy, and the Black Caps managed to win the title after getting the better of them by four wickets with just two balls to spare.
