India’s Laxita Sandila bagged gold for India at the women’s 1500m race on the final day of the Asian U20 Athletics Championships in Yecheon, South Korea on Wednesday. She produced the best time of 4:24:23 second to stand on the top podium. With this, Laxita has clinched India’s fifth gold medal in the championship. 

Sandila achieved this feat by surpassing her previous personal best of 4:26:48 by a significant margin of two seconds. In the men’s 1500m race, Mehdi Hasan claimed bronze for India as he finished his race in 3:56:01 seconds. On the flip side, Shivaji Parashu Madappagoudra won silver for India in the men’s 5000m race. He achieved this feat by achieving the timing of 14:49:05 seconds. After this, India’s medal tally has reached a total of 17 medals. 

India started their 2023 Asian U-20 Athletics Championship campaign on a promising note by winning three medals on the opening day.  Rezoana Mallick Heena and Bharatpreet Singh kicked off the season by clinching gold medals in women’s 400m race and men’s discus throw respectively. Heena took 53.31 seconds to finish in the top position on the podium in the women's 400m. 

Continuing India’s winning streak in South Korea, shot putter Siddharth Choudhary claimed gold for India on Monday. He delivered a personal best throw of 19.52m. Not only this, but decathlete Sunil Kumar also contributed to India’s tally by winning a yellow metal for the country.
