Nandre Burger, the South African cricketer, who suffered a lumbar stress fracture, has been ruled out of the ongoing ODI series against Ireland, which is currently being played in the UAE, and the upcoming Tests in Bangladesh later this month as well. As per the statement from Cricket South Africa (CSA), fast bowler Nandre Burger had “experienced discomfort in his lower back, and subsequent scans revealed the injury,” prior to the start of the second ODI between South Africa and Ireland at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
Notably, after the revelation of the injury to Nandre Burger, he is set to return home to South Africa and undergo further assessments, to determine the true extent of his injury before he starts his rehabilitation. While the second ODI is set to be completed later today, the CSA haven’t yet announced a replacement for Nandre Burger in regards to the third ODI later this week, and it is important to note that South Africa currently have a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Bangladesh will be hosting South Africa for a two-match Test series from October 21 onwards
As far as the South Africa Test squad for Bangladesh tour is concerned, with Nandre Burger being ruled out, they only have three fast bowlers namely Kagiso Rabada, Dane Paterson, and Wiaan Mulder in their squad currently. Bangladesh will be hosting South Africa for a two-match Test series from October 21 onwards at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka and the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram.
Moreover, Tony de Zorzi has also missed out on playing the second ODI for South Africa against Ireland due to a “soft tissue injury of his right knee.” The left-handed top order batter was rested by the South Africa team management as a precautionary measure for the ongoing second ODI, while his involvement in the third ODI of the series, slated to be played on Monday, October 7, is still to be decided.
