Defending champions India will face the highest-ranked team in Intercontinental Cup 2023, Lebanon at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubhaneshwar on Thursday, June 15. India are currently at the top of the table with six points while Lebanon are second with four points.
India are the defending champions of the tournament, having won it in 2019 by beating Tajikistan 4-2 in the final. The Blue Tigers started their title defense with two wins, beating Mongolia 2-0 and Vanuatu 1-0, thanks to goals from Sunil Chhetri and Bipin Singh. This tournament serves as an important practice for the SAFF championship in Bengaluru and AFC Asian Cup.
Lebanon have also won their first two games, beating Vanuatu 3-1 and Mongolia 1-0, thanks to goals from Hassan Maatouk, Hilal El-Helwe, and Mohamad Haidar. Lebanese are coached by Aleksandr Ilic who coincidently was a teammate of Indian Coach Igor Stimac at Cadiz in 1994.
