South African fast bowler Gerald Coetzee was picked up by the Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2024 auction. The five-time IPL champions paid INR 5 crore for the young South African speedster. The 23-year-old burst on the scene with an incredible ODI World Cup 2023 where he picked up 20 wickets.

The Mumbai Indians have been amid a lot of drama before the IPL 2024 auction as they completed a historic trade for Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya in an all-cash deal. To accommodate this transfer, MI had to trade their most expensive player, Australian all-rounder Cameron Green in a similar cash deal to the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Then Mumbai again grabbed all the headlines after announcing Hardik Pandya as their captain for IPL 2024, replacing franchise cornerstone Rohit Sharma. The decision created a lot of noise on social media which saw MI losing around one million followers.

Coming back to the auction, the Mumbai Indians are left with a sum of INR 12.25 crore in their purse. Moments after Coetzee's signing, the IPL auction saw its most expensive player in Australian captain Pat Cummins, who was picked up for a whopping INR 20.5 crore by the Sunrisers Hyderabad.
