After a lot of back and forth around new contracts being offered to certain Bayern players, one has made it clear about his intention to leave the club at the end of the current season. And the name is none other than Thomas Muller, who has been nothing short of a club legend at Bayern Munich. With 700-plus appearances for the Bavarian giants and 500-plus G/A over a quarter of a decade at the club, Muller’s longevity and consistency is one for the history books. However, shortly after Muller announced his departure from the club at the end of the season, some fans gave a lot of stick to Bayern for this decision.

Although Muller’s decision does make sense considering that he is 35 years old, the German midfielder has not completely retired from professional football and we might see him donning some other jersey post June 2025. This fact irritates a couple of Bayern fans who wanted to see Muller retire as a one-club guy at his boyhood club. There have also been questions about the real reason behind Bayern’s decision to offload the veteran.

Tough test up ahead for Bayern in the Champions League

Amongst all the different rumours, Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl has confirmed the rationale behind letting Thomas Muller go and has stated that it has nothing to do with the finances involved. He said, “It had nothing to do with the financial aspect. It was a sporting decision.” The decision probably stems from Bayern’s vision and commitment towards building a new project for the future with younger and newer players.

The club is recently coming off a commanding 3-1 victory against Augsburg in the Bundesliga which puts them six points clear at the top of the table above rivals Bayer Leverkusen. The Bavarians will be facing a tough test in midweek as they come up against Italian giants Inter Milan in the quarter-final of the Champions League.
