England and Scotland squared off against each other on Tuesday in an international friendly at the Hampden Park in Glasgow, Scotland. While England defeated Scotland 3-1 and improved their head-to-head record against them, the former Manchester United captain, Harry Maguire made headlines with his own goal, which was the only goal for the Scottish side on September 12.
The 30-year-old Man United defender has been in the middle of criticism for a long time and his own goal against Scotland on Tuesday led the fans and pundits to point their fingers again at the defender. However, England coach Gareth Southgate has backed the "absolute stalwart" in his post-match interview.

Harry Maguire's own goal denied a clean sheet to England as it was the only goal by the home side in the friendly match. However, the Three Lions were in a commanding position when Scotland appeared on the scoresheet as England managed a 2-0 lead prior to the own goal.

England went on to win the match 3-1 and boss Southgate backed Harry Maguire in a post-match interview and said, "It's a consequence of ridiculous treatment of him for a long period of time. It's a joke, I've never known a player treated like he is, not by the Scottish fans, by our own commentators, pundits, whatever it is, It's beyond anything I've ever seen.
"It’s beyond anything I’ve ever seen. He's been an absolute stalwart for us in the second-most successful team for decades. He's been an absolute key part of that."
Talking about the game, Phil Foden (32') and Jude Bellingham (35') continued their staggering form in the game against Scotland and gave a two-goal lead to end the first half as they scored in a space of three minutes. In the second half, while trying to block a low cross inside the box by Scotland, Harry Maguire unintentionally scored an own goal. However, England captain Harry Kane scored the third goal in the 81st minute to help his side comfortably win the game.
