Spain and Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas' tweet on Sunday has broken the Internet. The 41-year-old took to the micro-blogging website on Sunday and came out as gay, demanding respect from his fans and followers. His revelation came a year and a bit after he announced his separation from his wife.

While Casillas' tweet was met with support from his colleagues and the football fraternity one comment that has grabbed eyeballs came from the retired goalkeeper's former national teammate Carles Puyol. Not only did Puyol write: "It's time to tell our story, Iker" but he even followed it with a heart and kiss emoji.

The response from Puyol fuelled speculation over his sexuality. While it has been assumed that he is straight, one gets the impression that it might not necessarily be the case.

Coming back to Casillas, his social media post came at the backdrop of him refuting reports which linked him romantically with Shakira. Much like Casillas, Shakira too had split from her spouse Gerard Pique.

Casillas had famously kissed his then-girlfriend sports presenter Sara Carbonero after Spain had won the FIFA World Cup responding to criticism that suggested that she distracted the footballer. The two got married in 2016 before they announced their separation in 2021.

"Both Sara and I feel enormously proud of the family we are and of having shared a love that has filled us with happiness during all our years together," Casillas had said at that time.

"Today our love as a couple takes different but not distant paths since we’ll continue together in the marvellous task of continuing to be devoted parents as we have been up until now," he had added.

"This is a well-considered decision which we have taken through mutual agreement," he stated.
