Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Mumbai Indians (MI) locked horns at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on Sunday. RCB captain, Faf du Plessis won the toss and decided to bowl first. While Mumbai Indians faltered in the first half of the innings as RCB reduced them to 29/3 in the powerplay, the visitors managed to post 171/7 in their 20 overs.
Tilak Varma single-handedly propelled MI to a fighting total as the southpaw scored an unbeaten 84 off just 46 balls. Meanwhile, star players like Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Tim David, and Cameron Green failed miserably. The four players scored 31 runs together. Nevertheless, MI posted a decent total and Rohit Sharma made a substitution straight away when MI came on to bowl.
Sharma got in Jason Behrendorff as the Impact Player in place of Suryakumar Yadav. With this, Behrendorff became the first overseas Impact Player at IPL 2023.
However, this substitution did not augur well for MI as Behrendorff ended the game with a figure of 3-0-37-0. In fact, none of MI's players could leave an impact barring Tilak Varma. RCB thrashed the five-time champions by eight wickets to take two key points early in the tournament.
Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis starred for the host team as the pair put on a 148-run partnership for the first wicket. While du Plessis perished after scoring 73, Kohli stayed there till the end and hit the winning run as well.
