Star Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah achieved a new milestone during the fifth and final Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Sydney Cricket Ground. With the responsibility of leading India for the fifth Test, Bumrah took two wickets in the first innings as India bowled Australia for 181 runs, taking a lead of four runs. It allowed the right-arm pacer to break the 47 years old record to become India’s leading wicket taker in a single away Test series. Bumrah is currently the highest wicket-taker in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy down under with 32 scalps in nine innings so far.
With his breathtaking performance in the ongoing Test series, Jasprit Bumrah has now surpassed former Indian captain Bishan Singh Bedi to become a leading wicket-taker for India in an away Test series. Notably, Bedi finished as a leading wicket taker in India’s tour to Australia in 1977/78. The left-arm off-spinner took 31 scalps in five matches. Now Bumrah, has already 32 wickets in the ongoing BGT with an innings to go. However, the stand-in Indian captain suffered back spasm during the first innings of the Sydney Test, and is yet to take a decision on bowling in the second innings.
Jasprit Bumrah becomes joint-highest wicket taker in BGT 2024-25
Along with the historic feat of becoming India’s highest wicket-taker in an away Test series, Jasprit Bumrah also achieved a new milestone in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The fast bowler has now equalled former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh’s records for being the highest wicket-taker in single edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Bumrah has taken 32 wickets in nine innings so far in the ongoing Test series, while Harbhajan took as many wickets during the 2000-01 BGT in India.
However, Jasprit Bumrah also has a chance to surpass Harbhajan Singh in the second innings of the Sydney Test, and become highest wicket taker in a singel Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. Talking about the match, India are currently leading 145 runs by the end of day two of the fifth Test. The visitors scored 141/6 in the second innings so far with Rishabh Pant top scoring with a quickfire 61(33) runs. Currently, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar are at the crease ahead of day three.
