John Terry, the former England and Chelsea captain, has sparked outrage among fans for demanding exorbitant costs for autographs and dinner from them on his solo tour. Terry is holding four events across the country where he talks about his career and answers questions from the audience.
However, there is a high cost for admirers who wish to get a souvenir from the icon. Tickets for Terry's Birmingham performance start at £25 for general admission, but fans who want to guarantee to get an autograph must pay an additional £100 for one signature on top of the ticket price or pay £500 per person for the "sponsorship package."
The sponsorship package' costs £5,000 for a table of ten guests who receive a private two-course dinner with Terry and can have up to one item signed along with a picture of them. The £5,000 tables are still available for the Birmingham event, but it has already sold out for the evenings in Bournemouth and London.
Fans who have bought the £150 ‘platinum package’, which is sold out in Birmingham, get a photo with Terry and front row seating but do not get an autograph guaranteed in the ticket price, while the so-called ‘gold package’ also includes a photo but no autograph. A notice on the price list for tickets to ‘An Evening with John Terry’, says: "Signatures can be purchased on the link where you buy the tickets – you must bring your item – you will be required to come before the show to have your item signed.
Many supporters have expressed displeasure and rage at Terry's avarice and disregard for his fans. Some people have compared him to other former players who have performed on comparable occasions for considerably less money, or even for nothing. Others have questioned Terry's charitable giving practices and where the event's earnings are going. Terry has not yet offered a response to the debate.
