Jos Buttler has stepped down as England’s limited-over captain after failing to take his team to the knockouts of the ongoing Champions Trophy 2025. Afghanistan bagged an eight-run win against England in the eighth match of the tournament played on February 26 and knocked out the Buttler-led side of the competition. Before Afghanistan, England also failed to pass the Australia challenge on February 22. England will next play for pride against South Africa at the National Bank Stadium on Saturday, March 1.

Before entering the mega 50-over event, England toured India and faced a 0-3 drubbing at the hands of the Men in Blue in the three-match ODI series. Buttler struggled as skipper in World Cup 2023 in India as well where they landed in the tournament as defending champions, but failed to defend the title and ended the campaign in the group stage. Announcing his decision, Buttler said, "I'm going to stand down as England captain. It's the right decision for me and the right decision for the team. Hopefully somebody else who can come in alongside Baz will take the team to where it needs to be."

Jos Buttler will be leading England for the last time in Karachi

Jos Buttler will be seen as a skipper for the last time in the contest against the Proteas in Karachi. Back in 2022, he replaced Eoin Morgan as England captain in white-ball formats. After taking over the responsibility, he guided the side to the T20 World Cup 2022 victory in Australia. Following the 34-year-old’s resignation, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) might appoint young Harry Brook as their skipper in limited-over formats.

South Africa are leading the table in Group B with five points, while England are the only team who haven’t earned a single point in the competition. After the Champions Trophy, the 2019 ODI World Cup champions will play their next match in the format against West Indies in May 2025 at Edgbaston.
