The summit clash of the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) got underway at the Braborune Stadium on Sunday evening. Delhi Capitals captain Meg Lanning won the toss and decided to bat first. But her decision backfired as DC Women lost two wickets in one over. Isabelle Wong who bagged a hattrick in the Eliminator a couple of days back, struck twice in her first over and dismissed Shafali Verma and Alice Capsey.
The Mumbai Indians Women's pacer got both wickets on full-toss deliveries. While the Alice Capsey dismissal was a fair one, the delivery that got Shafali out caused controversy. As Wong bowled a slower full-toss outside the off stump, Shafali ended up playing it into the hands of the backward point fielder. While the on-field umpire adjudged the batter out, Verma and Lanning asked for a review.
But with the ball tracker showing the ball dipping at the end, the TV umpire retained the on-field decision and Verma was adjudged out. While MI Women were chuffed to bits, DC Women had clear disappointment on their faces. Their fans were also not pleased as they bashed the third umpire on Twitter.
