After the suspension of IPL 2021, Indian cricket fans have finally got news to cherish on Sunday. BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has confirmed that India will be touring Sri Lanka for 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is in July. Notably, Virat Kohli's side will be on the tour of England during that time and it is expected that BCCI will be sending a different team for the Sri Lanka series, which will include players that do not feature in India's recently-selected squad for the WTC Final and the 5-match Test series.

Will India send a second-string squad to Sri Lanka?

India will be playing the final of the World Test Championship in Southampton from June 18-22. Whereas Sri Lanka will be playing 3 T20Is and 3 ODIs against Eoin Morgan’s side in England and the tour comes to an end on July 4. Notably, the first Test of the 5-match series between India and England is set to commence on August 4.

Hence, there will only be a 30-day window where the bilateral series between India and Sri Lanka can be conducted. Considering the quarantine measures with 6 matches to take place, it is very unlikely that the players of the Test team will be travelling to Lanka. In that case, BCCI is expected to send a second-string squad for this bilateral series which could feature a lot of youngsters, who would be raring to make their case for a place in India’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup in October.
